I use the name Aelita on a lot of different sites, and I often get comments like “dude I love Code Lyoko” and it took me a while to actually find out there was a character named Aelita in it, because I’ve never seen it.
It’s actually from the Soviet science fiction novel Aelita, Or the Decline of Mars, which was also one of the big productions of the silent film era.
It is one of my favorites, and also it is a very pretty name. You may also notice my icon being Alita from the manga Battle Angel Alita, or the occasional post about it. That’s also one of my favorites, but the name is pronounced differently. GUNNM was localized as Battle Angel Alita, and changed the main character’s name from Gally to Alita as a reference to the novel and silent film epic as a nod to the main character’s Martian origins. There was a US B-movie in the 50s, Flight to Mars, that borrowed the plot from the Tolstoi novel and changed her name to Alita. While it’s far too late to undo the localization, I’ll always prefer the original Japanese name for the series and main character.
“Aelita” is pronounced with a long i sound on the first syllable.

Trying to make a living from YouTube is like constantly running along the edge of a knife in clogs, it is incredibly stressful, it is mentally destructive and you do a truly obscene amount of work for genuinely very little compensation relative to the hours put in.
A big one-time payout from a streaming deal from some desperate studio jackoff could be life-changing, but it does not come for fucking free. The money they are offering you is money they have ripped directly from the hands and mouths of other creatives.
If you saw someone rip food out of someone else's hands and then offer it to you, you wouldn't fucking take it, would you? If you have a shred of decency you'll tell the guy to give the fucking food back and go get fucked. And if you were the one getting food ripped out of your hands, you'd reasonably expect the people around you to have that same solidarity with you and not accept it.
The industry will try to abstract this as much as possible - they're doing it in the press right now, "oh it's just a bunch of rich, selfish Hollywood elites making a play for more money!" is EXPLICITLY an attempt to get you to see the union members as something other than your fellow workers - and they'll try to pull shit like "oh the strike has nothing to do with you, you're not a member of the union and you won't see the benefits so why should you sacrifice this opportunity for them" and so on.
They're trying to make the issue more distant and abstract, to alienate you from your fellow human beings. And in response we must make it closer and more concrete.
The money they offer to a scab is taken from the hands of a union member. They are offering you a union member's student loan payments, their rent, their food budget, their kids' college funds.
Do not take it. It is not and can never be worth it.

my chosen NHS surgeon has, without seeing me or speaking to me, refused to operate. i’ve been told my case will be transferred to a different hospital, one that’s further away, more expensive to travel to and has longer waiting times.
so, i’m going private. unfortunately, i’m on disability benefits and don’t have private health insurance coverage, so my only choice is to turn to the kindness of strangers. if you can help, this would really mean the world to me, as i’ve had to delay my transition by so much already.

i’m not too proud to beg, my transition has been a bit of a nightmare; i’ve been refused hormones for being gay and gnc and later, for being on psych medication. my surgery referral was delayed as is, by years, because i was homeless.
i’m already in my 30s. i refuse to wait any longer, but unfortunately, money is an impassable barrier to me. i have no family support, i’m too sick to work a steady job, i’m single so i can’t rely on a partner’s family or insurance and the NHS clearly isn’t interested in helping me in particular or trans people in general.
so i’m turning to the Internet. if 500 people donated just £20 each, i’d be able to afford not only the surgery but any unexpected auxiliary expenses. travel costs are not a concern at the moment, i’ll cross that bridge when i come to it.
my life has been hard enough. i’d like at least this to work out.

Chapter 14 of Cinder: The Life and Times of Avatar Azula is out just in time for the AO3 DDoS attack; which I’m pretty sure has broken the tumblr link function.
The Mahābhārata is an ancient Hindu epic, a sort of consolidated national mythology of the Indo-Aryans. Its title translates to “great epic of the Bharata”
This chapter came out long, disjointed and a bit chaotic, a bit fitting given the title. Its namesake, being a popular work unlike the Vedas, represents an accretion of popular myths into a single narrative, resulting in the longest epic poem in any language.
We have arrived at last at the final arc of Book One. I probably should have afforded myself more time and space to set up all the final threads for where they need to be for that, but in the end I felt it better to keep tempo.
The biggest focus of this chapter turned out to be the developing romance between Azula, Katara and Yue, and I hope I’ve made it compelling beyond the basic impulse of “I like these characters, they should smooch each other”.
Just my luck, I post the next chapter of Cinder right when AO3′s servers decide to crap out.

Most touchscreens have a temperature resistance of less than 40°C (104°F). They do not belong on cars, toasters, ovens and stoves, any kind of safety equipment, or any equipment that requires precision of operation to maintain safety. They do not belong anywhere near a working engine.
